Tehran summons German diplomat as Berlin decides to close Iranian consulates

TEHRAN – The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Thursday summoned the German charge affairs over Germany’s move in denying consular services to Iranian citizens living in the Western European country, calling the move “destructive".

“The decision of the federal German government in halting the works of Iran’s consulates in the country is unacceptable and unjustifiable,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The moved followed after German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced that the Iranian consulates in the cities of Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich are to be closed over the execution of German-Iranian convicted terrorist Jamshid Sharmahd.

The chief activities of Iran’s consulates in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich are to provide consular services to Iranians residing in Germany and defending their interests in the host country, but the decision of the German government to close these diplomatic centers is “intentionally” intended to deprive Iranians from consular services, the Foreign Ministry stated.

The ministry added this move cuts the most important and oldest links between the Iranian and German nations.

It also said the statement by the German Foreign Ministry in this regard is “injudicious, meddlesome, unprofessional and tactless that lacks any legal basis or value.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also said, “This unconstructive and confrontational approach of Germany is a major miscalculation, and the German government will be responsible for its consequences.”

On Monday, Iran's Judiciary executed Sharmahd, the ringleader of a US-based terrorist group behind a series of deadly attacks against the Iranian nation.

Germany protested the execution by recalling its ambassador to Tehran and summoning the Iranian charge d’affaires in Berlin.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday that granting a German passport to an individual does not provide impunity, "let alone a terrorist criminal".

Writing on his X account, Araghchi said, "No terrorist enjoys impunity in Iran. Even if supported by Germany. Iranian national Jamshid Sharmahd openly and unashamedly led a terrorist attack on a MOSQUE that killed 14 innocent people—including women and children. More than 200 were injured. The evidence is public and available for all to see. A German passport does not provide impunity to anyone, let alone a terrorist criminal."
